Meet Grant Thomas

Software Engineer

Conquering Languages (Spanish to JavaScript)

Grant Thomas is a Software Engineer at Seatrec. He supports the development and visualization of engineering and scientific data from Seatrec’s ocean robots and sensors. As a full-stack engineer working with Python, React, TypeScript, Node, D3, and AWS, Grant handles Seatrec’s customer-facing web portal, which manages and displays ocean-related data and instrument engineering health data.

Grant’s background is a fascinating blend of linguistic expertise and software engineering. With a background in languages including Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese, Grant was a professor in Japan teaching ESL. However, his journey took a turn when he decided to immerse himself in software languages, diving headfirst into the world of JavaScript.  His journey from linguistics to software engineering underscores his adaptability and determination to navigate through these different domains, each with its own set of challenges and opportunities to learn.

He holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor’s Degree from Saint Louis University in Madrid.  When he’s not coding, you can find him playing rock guitar or on a long-distance run.
