Seatrec is a renewable-energy technology company based in Monrovia, California. Seatrec was founded in 2012 to commercialize technology originally developed by Dr. Yi Chao and his team at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Under an exclusive license from Caltech the company has developed a compact modular thermal engine for use in the thermally-stratified upper ocean to support the oceanographic research and defense markets.  Ongoing research and development has resulted in federal contracts, additional patent applications and the potential for new commercial energy-harvesting products.

how it works

Many substances expand as they are heated and change phase from solid to liquid to gas. This expansion results in pressure that can be captured and used to generate electricity. Seatrec is developing technologies to generate energy from both the solid-to-liquid and liquid-to-gas phase transitions of several substances.

What We've Achieved

Seatrec has been recognized for both its technical achievements and business promise:

  • Patent awarded: Phase Change Material Thermal Power Generator (US7987674, 2011)

  • Patent awarded: Phase Change Material Thermal Power Generator (US8689556, 2014)

  • Patent pending: Environmental Thermal Energy Conversion (US2018/0119680, 2018)
